Nice to have an independent electronics store around that sometimes buys in bulk. I had two ups (un-interruptible power supplies) batteries bite the dust after many years of fine service. The power where we live now is spotty at best sometimes. Changing the batteries every 3 to 5 years is recommended anyway. I am sure the old batteries were due to be changed. You can check the ups battery voltage as you would any battery when detached from the ups. So it is a good idea to have a good voltmeter (a multimeter is better). Voltage is the ability of a battery to push electricity over wires or a circuit as it is normally called. I found some units that were better than the original equipment for a fraction of the cost of the equivalent replacements. I bought one, but plan to get another one for my other old ups.

Reasons for a ups:

The effects of power problems include keyboard lockup, complete data loss, hardware degradation, damaged motherboards, and more, making downtime inevitable. A UPS instantly switches your computer to emergency battery backup power and allows you to work through brief power outages or to shut down your system in the event of an extended outage. High-performance surge suppression protects your computer from electrical noise and damaging power surges – even lightning.

Another product to have is a Kilowatt meter to guage the power your equipment uses so that you do not overload your ups. I use a Killawatt just for that purpose. You also become addicted with it to see how much electricity small appliances use when trying to make your home as green as possible.

Most ups batteries have two basic specs. One is the voltage of the battery it supports and the amp/hours it can support. A 1280 supports a 12 volt battery with 8 amp hours. Most ups’s are 12 volt.

Most ups’s have a wattage rating. You can use the killawatt to see how much power each of your pieces of computer equipment use and then total up the wattage. that will give you a good idea of what size ups you need or if your existing ups can really support what your have.

You can find articles where people have taken larger batteries and hooked them to the ups. I am not a proponent of that. there are so many safety issues to consider. I would not prefer to do any mods here.

This was just a quick look at ups’s.
